Pine 'C' Fife

This handsomely made wooden 'C fife flute is one-piece, lightweight pine, with a woodcut of a fife-player printed on it. C was the second key I made fifes in because of its relationship to the piano keys. simplicity of note reading, and because recorders and Celtic harps are often in C.

Hold the fife sideways to the right and blow across the sound hole to get notes. Simple fingering obtains notes of the scale (diatonic mode --do-re-mi..) in the key of C, and cross-fingering obtains notes in between. Getting the notes of the upper register (next scale up) requires a bit more practice. Directions include a fingering chart.

The contoured mouthpiece (see inset photo) makes playing easier and with less breath, especially for the beginner. If you're a player, you may feel more like you are breathing a tune rather than playing it.
