Pine 'D' Fife

This nicely crafted wooden 'D fife' flute is one-piece lightweight pine, with a woodcut of a fife-player printed on it. This was the first fife I decided to make, in the key of D which is a popular key for tunes, and folk songs. The note holes are comfortably spaced for most fingerings

The fife is held sideways to the right and blown across the mouthpiece to get notes. Simple fingerings get notes of the scale (diatonic mode --do-re-mi..) in the key of D, and cross-fingerings get notes in between. Notes in the upper register (next scale up) requires a bit more practice. These notes can be fingered just as the lower, or with the cross-fingerings in the directions.

The 'carved contour' mouthpiece (inset photo) makes blowing notes easier, especially for beginners.
