Hold fife sideways to the right and blow across the mouthpiece. Simple fingerings obtain notes of the scale (diatonic mode --do-re-mi..) in the key of E, and cross-fingering gets notes in between. Getting the notes of the upper register (next scale up) requires a bit more practice. The higher scale can be fingered as the lower, or with cross-fingerings as in the instructions.
The 'carved contour' mouthpiece (inset photo) makes blowing easier, especially for beginners.
