Red cedar's close grain and evergreen flexibility combines hard and softwood qualities to give a vibrant and full timbre. I posted this little tune for a sample. (The throat noises are an example of how not to play).
I can play the Low G fife easier than small ones, as finger callouses seal the note holes better. Playing has led to slight carving improvements inside the mouthpiece and some of the note holes, keeping external symmetry, and lessening tonal differences in trasitional notes from low to high octaves.
The Low G Fife keeps the carved contoured mouthpiece. This smoothes airflow over the trailing edge more easily than over a circular arc, for quicker attack of a note. I have pursued the goal of making playing easier. The contour makes it easier to sound a note, and provides a finer 'sweet spot' than a simple curve, I believe.
Each Fife comes with written instructions. here. I will post more playing hints on this website.
