G Fife, American Black Walnut

17 3/8 x 15/16 inches, bore 11/16"

This Low G Fife of American Black Walnut is one of a several hardwood Low G fifes I made, after the first few in Northern White Pine. I start with pine, as tools must be sharper and more accurately aligned to work the softer wood. You can read about the 4 year saga of the Low G Fife here.

Black walnut fifes sound 'purer' than softwood fifes -- the air vibrates inside the flute without vibrating the wood appreciably. Pine is cheery and bright, but black walnut sounds robust, mellow, and full. I posted a bit of the tune 'Inishmore' for a sample. .

I can play the Low G fife easier than smaller fifes because guitar-calloused fingers seal the note holes better. Playing has led to slight carving improvements inside the mouthpiece and some of the note holes, keeping external symmetry, and lessening tonal differences in trasitional notes from low to high octaves.

The Low G Fife keeps the carved contoured mouthpiece. This smoothes airflow over the trailing edge more easily than over a circular arc, Notes have quicker attack. I find this shaped mouthpiece gets more expression.
