Low D Pine Fife

1 5/16 X by 21 3/4 inches long x 15/16 inch bore

After hearing a Low D whistle played so beautifully in sessions and on CDs. I wondered how a Low D Fife would sound. The low D Fife's proportions allow open note holes without requiring the use of keys.

This Low D Fife has the carved contoured mouthpiece of my other flutes, which laminates the airstream to produce notes more easily, and with sharper attack. The sound is robust, deep, and mellow. Lower notes have an owl 'hoot' quality. I have posted some mp3s of the fife, a scale here and a tune here.

Since the Low D Fife is held to the (right) side, fingers reach better than on a whistle which is held straight out. The left hand fingers curl diagonally around the Fife, so I have slanted the upper three holes for ease of holding. For a good reach, use first, second, and fourth fingers.

Fingering is 'straight ahead' for the low octave and most of the high octave. Instructions which come with the fife show cross-fingerings for the highest notes. The upper register (octave) may require some playing around to find the best fingerings. An expanded fingering chart is posted here.
